2024-06-17 Fertilizer consumption in Spain in 2023

According to statistics prepared by the National Association of Fertilizer Manufacturers (ANFFE), fertilizer consumption in Spain in 2023 was 3.7 million tons of product, 5 percent higher than the previous year. Although the market is gradually recovering, this figure is still far below the fertilizer consumption that was usual in our country until 2020, which was around 5 million tons per year.

By type of product, sales of nitrogen fertilizers are worth mentioning, exceeding 1.9 million tonnes in terms of product, with urea and ammonium nitrates being particularly prominent, followed by complex fertilizers, with sales exceeding 1.4 million tonnes. Sales of phosphate and potassium fertilizers, meanwhile, were around 170,000 and 240,000 tonnes, respectively.

Considering that fertilizer consumption is greater in those Autonomous Communities that have a larger agricultural area, Castilla y León continues to lead consumption, followed by Andalusia and Castilla la Mancha.

In terms of foreign trade, fertilizer imports in 2023 have increased by 4.5 percent to 3.3 million tons, while exports have grown by 3.5 percent to 2.4 million tons.
